Light Mine wins Home of the Year 2020

Light Mine has been named Home of the Year 2020.

Rising from the dunes on Kuaotunu, the bach catches the eye of passers-by, with its pyramid-like towers rising from the roof. The house, a low-slung, single level home, with room for children and grandchildren, is an exploration of strong sculptural forms that reference the mine shafts of the area’s long-abandoned gold mines and features three ‘pods’ scattered around a casual grassy courtyard.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this project – in particular to the talented team in our studio; to Chris and Bob – collaborating with you has been amazing, we created a home together and a piece of architecture that we hope will enrich the lives of you, and the family, for many years to come; to Bob and Percival Construction for building with craft; and to the many consultants and suppliers.

And, thank you to the judges, HOME Magazine and their sponsors Altherm Window Systems, and to our fellow finalists – we really are in good company.

Read more at HOME Magazine where you can watch a video of the project.

Open House 2: Design Criteria for a New Architecture by Florentine Sack

The Hut on Sleds House is featured in a new German publication – Open House 2: Design Criteria for a New Architecture by Florentine Sack. The book explores the idea of the ‘open house’ in both the literal sense of opening up the design of a house and also the fundamental attitude that understands people as not isolated from the environment, but in relationship to it. – “An Architecture that realizes this concept of the open house can allow us to experience the overall context of our universe.”

Sack curates and discusses many interesting international examples of the ‘open house’ making it a very exciting project to be included in!

City House Country House: Contemporary New Zealand Homes

John Walsh and Patrick Reynolds released a new book last week, City House Country House, featuring Crosson Architect’s Red House and CCCA’s The Orange. Another great book showcasing contemporary New Zealand Architecture – a beautiful visual record of our country’s innovative approaches to design in the home.

“City House, Country House explores 40 of New Zealand’s most outstanding residential projects in locations ranging from intensely urban to spectacularly remote. New family homes, suburban alterations, city apartments, coastal beach houses and rural retreats are all included in this impressive collection of recently completed projects, reflecting a growing diversity of living styles and architectural responses across the country.

Thoughtfully photographed and with accompanying plans and text that probes the design rationale behind each project, this is a highly collectable survey of some of New Zealand’s most innovative and interesting homes.”

Friday’s episode of The New Zealand Home was one not to be missed!
